Oncology service is the care of patients who have a diagnosis of cancer. This service of Brookville Hospital is provided in collaboration with Oncology Hematology Services of Northern PA. These physicians also provide service at the Hahne Regional Cancer Center in Dubois, PA.

Oncology Services
  • Medical Oncology service includes the evaluation of the patient, the diagnosis of disease, developing a plan of care that involves the administration of medications that may include chemotherapy and ongoing follow up of the patient’s status to include diagnostic testing and response to treatment.
  • Chemotherapy uses special drugs or drug combinations to destroy cancer cells. These drugs can be used as the primary treatment, or can be combined with radiation therapy and/or surgery. Chemotherapy is most frequently given through a vein (intravenously); however, there are times when it can be taken by mouth or by an injection. Oncology nurses, under direct medical supervision, administer the chemotherapy durgs and provide you with instructions to help you throughout your treatments. A specific, individualized treatment plan is developed by the physician for each patient.
  • The length and frequency of your chemotherapy treatment depends on a variety of factors. Prior to the start of your treatment, the medical oncologist explains your treatment plan to you.
Because chemotherapy affects the bone marrow, the body’s cell-producing factory, your blood counts are periodically monitored. You will be evaluated regularly by the medical oncologist and oncology nurse.
